Release of Chronic disease comorbidity analysis report

Wellbeing SA has released the Chronic disease comorbidity analysis report. This report was developed to better understand trends in chronic disease presentation, and whether it has had an impact on bed days in hospital.

South Australia has an ageing population and increasing rates of chronic disease. Multimorbidity, which refers to the presence of two or more chronic conditions in a person at the same time, will continue to be more common. Wellbeing SA has examined the trends in people admitted to South Australian hospitals from 2012 to 2020, considering any changes in the Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI). The CCI is an index used to predict the risk of death. The study shows there was a significant increase in CCI over the study period, with diabetes appearing to be an important contributor to the change in comorbidity over time.
