Now that I’m more active, how do I maintain my motivation?
Taking steps to lead a more active lifestyle is a huge achievement – well done!. Take a moment to reflect on this and be proud of the little (and big) changes you have made.
Making walking a habit can have longer term benefits. It can help you feel better and cope with life’s ups and downs more easily. Here are some tips to help keep up your motivation:
- Be active with family or friends: you are more likely to follow through with being active if you plan to go with someone else. You could even join a local walking group and make new friends (bonus: it’s more enjoyable to be active with other people!).
- Set goals for why you are being more active and share them with others to help keep yourself accountable. Are you trying to work up to walking for a certain length of time or distance, or to be able to keep up with your kids? Are you walking for your physical and/or mental wellbeing?
- Record your progress and reflect on how far you have come. You can track your steps (and other activity) through the 10,000 Steps website, use an activity tracking app or device, or make a record in your daily diary or calendar.
