New year, new you? Simple tips to make your health kick stick

A new year often brings new intentions and new health and wellbeing goals. To set ourselves up to achieve our health goals, it can be helpful to start small by adding stepped changes into our day until they eventually become a habit. Here are some quick tips that will help you maintain your health and wellbeing all year long.

1. Set realistic goals

Focus on one or two achievable goals. Make sure they’re realistic, measurable and can be tracked over time. Write them down and keep them somewhere you will see them all the time – you could stick them to your fridge, keep them in your wallet or handbag, or even set your goal list up as the wallpaper on your phone screen.

2. Find a buddy

We’re more likely to stick to our goals if we have friends to keep us accountable and motivated. When we have someone who cares about us support our goals, we find it easier to achieve them! You could either ask your buddy to join you in achieving your goals, for example meeting up for regular walks if you have a goal to get fitter, or if they are on board to keep you accountable you could set a regular time to check in with your buddy and update them on how you’re going. You could also offer to be a ‘buddy’ for a friend to help keep them accountable in achieving one of their goals.

3. Have healthy snacks on hand

When we feel like a snack, it’s easy to reach for sugary treats or fast food, especially when there are no other options around. By carrying healthy snacks in our bag or keeping healthy foods in our pantry, we are prepared for the times we feel hungry and are more likely to choose these options. Some ideas for healthy snacks that are convenient to have on hand include an apple, a handful of nuts or veggies and hummus.

4. Keep up your water intake

Drinking water is essential for good health and wellbeing, but many people find it difficult to drink enough water regularly, especially when we are busy. By drinking more water throughout our day, we help our bodies function properly. Here are a few ways to increase your water intake:

  • carry a reusable water bottle with you throughout the day
  • set reminders on your phone
  • replace soft drinks and sports drinks with plain water or flavoured with lemon, cucumber, strawberries or mint
